best friends?

After school Samuel told me about the mean things his friend, Ryan, kept saying to him. "He doesn't sound much like a friend," I commented.

"Yeah," he sighed, "but he's a really good racer. Sometimes he beats me. Sometimes I beat him. And sometimes we tie." Hmm, so that's what makes a friend.

  1. When Sammy says "friend" he signifies an interpersonal relationship in which the other person is a non-substitutable person in his life not just a role. They not only share, or know about each others' motives and emotions, but their relationship allows certain activities that are very motivating personally. Consider the early stages of little boys and girls, where the rules are "you boys chase us around the playground and we run away screaming." It goes from there. --Dad

  2. Good point. Every week Samuel names a different person as his best friend. He has obviously heard the term, but it doesn't mean the same thing to him as it does to me.
